The imaginatively titled Ghostbusters II, again helmed by Reitman, took five years to reach cinema screens and garnered mixed reviews from critics.
Ghostbusters was a box office smash and grossed $13.6 million on its opening weekend in the US… so a sequel was inevitable.
In the film, the barge-like vehicle was bought for $4,800 and ‘renovated’ by Stantz in his converted firehouse home-come-headquarters. Ironically, Cadillac also sold the basic vehicle as a hearse, which seems fitting considering the Ghostbusters’ storyline!Ĭonverted by Universal Studios, Ecto 1 sprouted bizarre and outlandish ghost wrangling gear, such as Proton Packs, Ecto Goggles and a variety of traps. The script surrounded oddball parapsychologists Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler who, after losing their respectable university jobs, set up a paranormal extermination service.īut besides the film’s main actors, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, the other star was the highly modified 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance, named Ecto 1. The catchy theme tune, sung by Ray Parker Jr, seemed to stay in the charts forever and spectral characters such as Zuul, Gozer the Gozerian and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man delighted audiences. Who ya gonna call? That was the questions on the lips of filmgoers in 1984 with the release of director Ivan Reitman’s amusing spook-hunting movie, Ghostbusters.

The Ecto 1a was probably being used by Ray, Winston, and Venkman, and Egon used the Ecto 1 for traveling to Summerville. In the book, it stated that the Ecto 1a was a newly purchased Cadillac, while the Ecto 1 was put in storage. Okay no, the Ecto 1a wouldn't be downgraded, why would they put the grills back on the hood and back door of the car, replace the red footstep, change all the LEDs and lights, and take off the stripes, for sentimental value, that's not very realistic. What do you think? One car? Two cars? How do you explain the changes from GB1 to GB2 back to the original design, but with gunner seat and RC ghost trap? It would have been interesting if we saw two cars at the end of the movie, in all honesty.

That means the new movie features the return of the original car and then. are we to believe they bought an identical car and the did. given it's just four Ghostbusters, Janine and Lewis, the firehouse, and the car. Some people have suggested that there's actually two twin cars, but. The gunner seat and RC ghost trap could be upgrades from between films or after GB2. I always just assumed that the Reitmans simply ignored the look of the car in the sequel in favor of its look in the original movie, a minor retcon, really. Afterlife re-introduced the car the way it looked in the original film with the license plate of Ecto 1, a gunner seat (the ladder moved to the other side), and a trap door for an RC ghost trap to come and go. 1989's sequel re-introduced us to the Ecto 1, but with changes, upgrades, and a license plate reading Ecto 1A. I'm leaving out the 2016 movie's car since that was a reboot and not in continuity with the other three films.ġ984's original film introduced us to the Ecto 1. There seems to be some disputes and some continuity issues in the movies. In these films, that would be the Ecto 1. In movies like Ghostbusters, the hero's vehicle can be as iconic as the hero.
